when we sat beneath the eiffel tower
my head was in your hands

when we sat beneath the apple tree
in the grass in my front yard
you reached up and picked the fruit
and placed it in my hands

we smiled and laughed as if the world had passed

your breathing tubes surrounded you

in a cold plastic cocoon.
